Mom with coffee and Bible, choosing time with God in the middle of busy parenting life

Holy Spirit > Mom Anxiety

Once I entered motherhood, washing dishes and sleeping through the night suddenly became virtually impossible to endure without repeatedly crying out to the Lord in prayer. It felt like there were more losses than wins and more failures than victories. I would see “super” moms drinking 100 oz. of water, their kids smiling, wearing matching outfits, enjoying a vacation, and think, “Wow, what am I doing wrong? Why can’t I be more like her?”

From Survival to Joy

I had tried to do motherhood in my own strength for too long. By the time my third child was born, I knew something had to give. I was often angry and stressed; feeling like a failure as I mentally listed all that I “should” be doing as a godly mom. As a believer of 20+ years, I should’ve leaned into Jesus sooner.

So, as I settled into life with three kids at home, I decided to make a change.

No more excuses.

I made sure to spend time in the Word every day, no matter if it was 5 or 25 minutes. I found myself not only craving God’s word but also feeling joy and peace in my everyday tasks. Life isn’t perfect all the time, but it feels more doable after sitting in God’s presence and reading His word. Filling yourself up with God’s truth will sustain you throughout the day!

Community & Purpose

As I grew in faith, I realized I was still missing a community to share in my struggles and victories. Then the Lord laid it on my heart to start a Moms in Prayer group. Oh, the testimonies I could share! There were hurdles in getting us all there, but wow, the community achieved by praying together for each other’s children was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

There was not a week God didn’t move and allow us to see Him working:

Children accepted Christ.

Relationships and physical ailments were healed.

Behavior issues improved.

And so much more.

In short, God was glorified and the moms involved were left feeling closer to Him and each other.

I say all this to encourage you to step out in obedience and watch God use it. The call won’t always be comfortable or easy, but God will always honor it.

Wanna be a “super mom?” Rely on the Holy Spirit to strengthen and empower you.

Fighting loneliness and missing community? Find a group of believers who are following Jesus and join them.

Time to start leaning desperately into Jesus for the strength, community, and the hope you need to survive and thrive in motherhood! He has a plan and you have a God-given purpose!

Connect to the Source of Life

Friend, it was always in God’s plan that you rely on Him. He created us knowing we would need Him to sustain us. And that’s a GOOD thing! Jesus said,

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

Did you catch that? When we are abiding in Jesus, seeking after Him, talking to Him, walking with Him, soaking in His presence,

THAT is when:

We will bear fruit.

We can make an eternal and spiritual impact on the lives around us.

We can truly be “super” moms, connected to the source of life.

When we are tapped into the power, the joy, the hope of our Creator and Savior, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), that’s when we’ll truly become the mom God wants us to be and the mom the kiddos around us need most.

Our kids don’t need us to strive for that worldly picture of a “super mom” – it’s so very temporary and has little eternal value. No, our children need us to show them Jesus. To watch us strive to be more like Him. To give them a picture, imperfect as it may be, of what true love looks like. Our children need to know their Savior.

Pray with me

Father God, Your plans are perfect and Your ways are always righteous. Forgive me, Lord, when I strive after earthly perfection as a woman and a mom. Help me lay down the temporary desires I have that are of this world. Renew my focus and connection to You and Your ways. Strengthen me, Father, and remind me of the blessing and hope of abiding in You. Lord, give me a hunger for Your word. Open my eyes to the time I have, however small, to sit and soak in Your presence. As I cling to You, Lord, allow the children under my influence to see Jesus shine most brightly in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ami Smith is a former teacher turned stay at mom, pastor’s wife, and lover of coffee and Jesus! Her favorite verse as she has gone through life is Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go!” Ami accepted Jesus as her Lord when she was 6 years old, but was timid and shy in her faith and it stayed shallow for many years. As she stepped into the role of pastor’s wife and mama to her 3 littles, she learned to lean on Jesus to survive the day to day and her faith grew leaps and bounds! Along with this came boldness and confidence to share the Gospel and love of Jesus. Beginning and leading a Moms in Prayer group in her community was another way God used and grew Ami. Each time she has stepped out in faith to obey, she sees God show up and work and move.

  1. Hi such a beautiful testimony,,,,, how beautiful a day is, when we are touched byGod the creator who can bestow creativity when we ask!

  2. Hello Ami, Thank you for writing about your struggles and God’s victories as you have submitted to him and started to spend time in his word daily. And I am so glad you decided, despite all the obstacles, to start a Moms in Prayer group in your area. Yes, it is not an easy road, but absolutely worth it! I believe if moms are not praying for their children, they become prey. And all the best to your husband. It is a hard job to be a pastor. May the Holy Spirit lead him, and may he have all the armor of God on him to protect him daily from the enemy attacks! May Jesus bless you and your family and grant you peace. We do serve an amazing God!
