What’s the Next Step?

Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge.
With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ERV)

As a young girl, I felt God’s peace when I asked Him to help me with my struggles. This started my open conversation with the Lord which has been a tremendous blessing to me, realizing the power and strength in prayer.

Fast forward several years later, I married, but after 6 ½ years went through a painful separation which led to an even more painful divorce. Our daughter was just 2 1/2 years old. I was broken, scared, alone and ashamed. I thank God for His love and pursuing me as His daughter!

I remember crying every night after I put my daughter to sleep and asking God to help me breathe because I didn’t know how I could survive. I kept hearing Him tell me, “Trust Me!” I prayed that I would not just be a single mom, but someone my daughter would look up to for godly wisdom. God pointed me to His Word and gave me strength:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)

Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”  Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

I stood on God’s promises and I watched Him answer my prayers time and time again.

Most recently, I asked God to show me what to do next since I stepped down from the Children’s Director role at my church after eight years. I wanted to focus more on my daughter who was going into 7th grade.

Being a single mom, full-time employee and full-time volunteer kept me very busy, but it was also a huge blessing to watch my daughter grow up so close with our church family. This was a time when God called me to rest. I obeyed, and knew it would be a step of faith because it was difficult for me to slow down.

You never know where God will lead you next! On a fall day last year, I received a text message which read, “You’ve won 4 tickets to the Moms in Prayer Unshaken Conference.” I thought, “Huh? I don’t remember entering the contest and I’m not sure what it is.” So I researched the conference and was intrigued.

I’m a mom and I love to pray so this could be exciting.

I wondered who I would invite since my friends were usually busy and it was less than 2 weeks away! I prayed about it and my friends said yes almost immediately. Besides, I had been asking God to help me deal with some struggles and wanted to hear about how to be “Unshaken!”

Friday was the first night of the conference. It was a challenge getting there since I had been dealing with car issues all week and had a bad headache, not to mention coordinating with my friends. Needless to say, we arrived at the church with ten minutes to spare! When I heard the worship, I was blown away. I had recently been praying and singing hymns, and there was the worship leader on stage singing hymns with a contemporary style. It was a special treat for me.

So much happened on the first night. My mind was reeling that I was at a Moms in Prayer conference for free and what a blessing it was to pray with so many women! My friends loved it as well and we were excited for the next day. I drove us all again in the morning. When we arrived and walked into the church, a woman approached us and asked if we wanted to sit in the front row. I thought, “Yes, I want to sit up front and soak up all God has in store for me today.”

The speakers were amazing, lunch was delicious and we met very sweet ladies. At lunch, we talked about how I won the tickets and had NEVER heard of this organization. Only God could do that! Then Sally Burke, President of Moms in Prayer, came to sit at our table. We told her the story and she looked at me and said, “You need to come visit Moms in Prayer headquarters.” I thought, “Wow God, You must have sent her to our table!”

After hearing Pam Farrel speak later, I went to her table and prayed about what book to buy. I thought it would have to do with dating, but instead God led me to her book, “Woman of Influence.” I met Pam and told her about winning the tickets, meeting Sally and praying about where God would use me next. She said, “You were looking for a new assignment and God sent Sally to your table,” then she prayed for me. I was grateful for winning the tickets, my friends being there with me, and most of all God leading me to this day.

The entire ride home, my friends and I couldn’t stop talking about every little detail from the conference. We even shouted over each other because we were so excited! We discussed starting a Moms in Prayer group and then found more and more reasons why we needed to share this experience with everyone we knew, especially our kids. It was truly LIFE CHANGING!

I want you to experience Unshaken too!

Desiree Larson grew up in San Jose, California in a Christian home. She was grateful to learn about God at a young age, but the older she grew, the more she learned about having a relationship with God instead of just knowing about God. This has transformed her life! Desiree says that talking and praying with God daily, sometimes minute by minute through prayer, is one of the best gifts God has given her and she loves sharing this with others.

  2. What an exciting story filled with so many blessings…I’m reading this as I’m sitting in my living room…waiting and asking God…what do I do next…trusting He will guide my steps…we recently moved to TX for my husband to attend DTS. We chose Frisco for the schools…which are amazing and I found out about MIP from a neighbor (I had always worked full time previously and my kids were in a private Christian school). Well it’s more expensive than we thought so we are back to figuring out what we need to do…so we need wisdom and are asking for prayer on what to do next. My husband is in school full time and is about to get back surgery for a work unjury. I have a passion for health and fitness but also the women in the church and missions…not sure how that all intertwines but praying…praying God will amaze me/us with a job I love but will allow me to drop off and pick up my kids from school…praying and asking for prayer!
