How to be victorious in prayer for your child or grandchild in school

Start the School Year with Worry or Confidence?

What if you could sit down and talk with a group of godly women who have been praying for up to 25 years?

Well, we did just that, and asked them two questions:*

1. How would you encourage us to be victorious in the midst of fear and worry?
2. How did God answer your prayers, demonstrating His faithfulness?

The answers are going to inspire you as mothers and grandmothers, to start the year in prayer, victorious in Christ.

You can be victorious in the midst of fear and worry

I welcome any opportunity to encourage moms with young children of the truths of who God is in the “long-haul,” throughout generations. In my current Moms in Prayer (MIP) group, some of us have been praying for our adult children since they were toddlers. We’ve seen many specific prayers answered, week after week, but we are still waiting on others. I am absolutely sure that God allows us to see progress in answer to our prayers to encourage us and remind us that He is still working.

  • They can be as small as a good day at school when your child didn’t want to go
  • Two children getting along well when they’ve previously had conflicts
  • A good experience visiting an adult child, instead of constant tension
  • An agreeable conversation about something “sticky” after being worried my child wouldn’t receive it well.

I know deep in my heart God will continue to answer prayers for my children and grandchildren and for all moms who come to Him with concerns about their kids. Keep praying. Don’t give up, especially through discouragement. He uses every part of every life – young to old, from beginning to end, the smooth and the messy – always for His glory and because of His love for you and your family.

I am absolutely sure that God allows us to see progress in answer to our prayers to encourage us and remind us that He is still working.

I had to work full-time most of the years our children were growing up. I was concerned that I wasn’t meeting their needs as their mother. Moms in Prayer provided the structure for me to persevere in prayer. Jesus gave me hope and peace that I could place my children into His care and trust Him for the answers.

In this world where fear is often a trap we as believers fall into, we need to exercise our faith and challenge it by staying in God’s Word and being encouraged through connection with the body of Christ. Prayer and caring for one another based on biblical truths and principles is key to Moms in Prayer.

Once I joined a Moms in Prayer group, I began to pray with confidence, knowing I was praying God’s will. As we prayed our children’s names into scripture verses, I was covering them in His Word and knew God would hear the cry of my heart for my children to base their identity in Him. It was so important to also have another mom’s insight in prayer when I didn’t know what to pray.

I thank God for the support of my sister prayer warriors during difficult times with my children, step children, and grandchildren. God has worked through our prayers to restore relationships.

God is Faithful to Answer Our Prayers

Our Moms in Prayer group heard that one of the teachers at our kids’ elementary school was diagnosed with cancer, so of course we began to pray for her. The teacher was a member of the same church two of us attended, but we didn’t see her often. With permission, I shared her diagnosis with our pastor and he went to visit her. Meanwhile, our group prayed for her weekly as she went through treatment. The prayers lifted on her behalf were answered and she returned to her classroom cancer-free! She also began attending church regularly and is now, 25 years later, a woman on fire for the Lord and still cancer-free. This testimony is a powerful example of God using our little group of moms to change her life not only physically, but spiritually.

God has healed relationships in my family: There was a time that my daughter wanted no contact with me. We now have a tender, restored relationship and she treats me with honor. My group also helped me to not give up on my prodigal son and shining Christ’s love as best I can to his wife who doesn’t like me. The answers continued with my step-son. When he was a young school-age child, his behavior was so hateful that I thought he would land in prison or get killed in a gang fight. Also, his environment at home with his mother was detrimental. Though it seemed hopeless, I kept praying. Today, he has thanked me for how I helped him learn another way.

Praying scripture for my grandchildren: After praying two of my daughters through junior high, high school and college, I was excited to start praying scripture into my grandchildren’s lives. I started a Grandmas in Prayer group with a friend when my oldest granddaughter was three years old. On that first prayer sheet, we prayed Proverbs 19:14, “Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a wise wife is from the LORD.” The prayer directive was to seek God for the one who would marry your grandchild in the future. My friend and I asked that my granddaughter would be wise, that her light would not be hidden, that her husband would love God, and they would serve God as individuals and as a couple.

At 21 years old and entering her senior year of college, I realized God had answered my prayers for my granddaughter over the years, especially in surviving the temptations of high school. Getting ready to step into her future, I shared the scripture prayers my group had prayed for her. A few months later, she was dating a young man she had been serving with in youth ministry and the following year they were married. He is preparing to be a pastor.

Adult children making important decisions: Our adult daughter is in the process of being a first-time homeowner. Her first offer fell through after an unfavorable inspection. The second offer was made quickly for a house that seemed like it didn’t match with what she wanted. That week in our Moms in Prayer group, I prayed with heavy concern since it is such an important decision. The prayers of my MIP partner came to my heart and mind many times. I felt such a bond with this woman because of the prayer time. My husband and I were relieved to hear that there was an issue with the heating so our daughter was able to walk away from the deal.

My husband decided to drive to our daughter’s town and ask the Lord if there was a house that He had in mind for her. That morning she received a text from her realtor about a house that was not on the market yet and was much nicer than the two previous homes. Plus, a relative of a friend from church was selling it. Our daughter made an offer and Lord willing, she’ll be the owner any day now. I know God’s hand was in the whole process, protecting, directing, answering, and blessing the waiting for what He deemed best. It’s so cool to see how God cares, even as our daughter claims to be an atheist.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58
