How to be grateful in the midst of tragedy

Victorious in Thanksgiving Part 2

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Colossians 4:2

In the second part of our Thanksgiving blog, we share more testimonies of what God has done behind the scenes of the Moms in Prayer 40th Anniversary postponement. God is the Master Planner and His will is sometimes accomplished in the unexpected.

Because they couldn’t fly into North Carolina, Kenyan Moms in Prayer leaders diverted to Florida. Judy Birir, Regional Coordinator, told us, “We learned of the postponement of the conference when we were already airborne. We knew about the coming storm, but never expected that it would be that serious.”

“When we arrived in Miami, we called the taxi operator that would have picked us up from the airport in North Carolina and he was very quick to warn us against flying into Asheville. We asked to be rerouted to Orlando where we knew missionaries at a retirement center who were from Africa. We spent the next eight days worshipping and fellowshipping with them. This was more than we imagined.”

Thanking God during unexpected circumstances

“As if God had another message for us, our planned flight out of Florida was canceled because of Hurricane Milton. It was terrifying to witness such a situation. We hardly slept. The thunderstorms, doors slamming open, trees falling… I don’t know how we survived the next two days without power!

We ended up helping the elderly by cleaning up in the aftermath of the storm. As we think about it now, this was the mission God had planned for us! Glory to our Victorious God.”

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“When the 40th anniversary event was postponed, I invited women who had registered for the event and lived in the New York City area to come over for lunch at my apartment.” Julie Koontz, New York State Coordinator, continued, “Few were able to attend and I considered canceling, but then I received an email from Franziska. She explained that she and Daniela came from Switzerland to the USA for the 40th event and since they couldn’t make it to Asheville, they were extending their time in New York. She asked if we could meet. The lunch was on!”

Moms in Prayer gathering in New York City

“We ended up having a gathering of Moms in Prayer (MIP) women, including the Regional Coordinator for Manhattan & Staten Island, Division Coordinator Karen Verhoog who drove over from New Jersey, and a group leader from Queens who first got involved in MIP when she lived in Switzerland years ago. Even my mom, former Kansas State Coordinator, was visiting for this mini version of an international Moms in Prayer meeting. We exchanged stories about what our groups are like and ideas for outreach and multiplying groups. After lunch, we prayed in a circle in English and Swiss German to close out our time together.”

Amy, Cornelia, & Julie

Cornelia Amstutz, Switzerland Country Coordinator, and her husband also received a warm welcome, this time in Georgia. State Coordinator Amy Conrod and her sister Julie who serves on the New York state team spent time with them in prayer and fellowship. Amy warmheartedly commented, “I’m grateful for this worldwide sisterhood of hope and united faith.”

Giving God thanks opens our eyes to the good things He is doing through our lives, gives us strength, encourages others when we share, honors the Lord, and demonstrates our faith.

Kay & Ncamsile

Translated resources are important to help equip praying moms and to start new Moms in Prayer groups. The 40th event postponement allowed Ncamsile, Area Coordinator in Eswatini, to travel to Arizona meeting up with International Leadership Developer Kay West to finish the SiSwati Booklet translation.

“After seeing the devastation from hurricane Helene that hit North Carolina, my heart was moved with compassion. My family and I lived in North Carolina for eight years and it has a special place in my heart. We have friends and loved ones there. In fact, my son Ryan and his bride Krista live there. I spoke to Ryan and that’s when I made the decision to fly there to help. We both have dear friends who were displaced due to the hurricane and we knew God called us to be His hands and feet to those who lost everything.” – Linda Zifko, Global Ministry Coordinator at MIP headquarters

Young mom new to MIP & Sue Forry, Regional Coordinator in Pennsylvania

When Sue Forry and several women in her group discovered that the 40th event was postponed, they decided to meet for their Moms in Prayer hour. The unexpected blessing was welcoming a new young mama leader and handing her a Booklet.

Jessica Okello, Uganda Country Coordinator, arrived early in the USA so she could visit her son and his family in Indianapolis before the 40th event. After hearing about the event postponement, she decided to stay in Indiana awhile longer.

Moms in Prayer leadership invited Jessica to lunch, along with two group leaders in the Indianapolis area. “It was a sweet time of sharing testimonies and learning. Moms in Prayer is such a beautiful example of love and unity! One thing Jessica shared that impacted me was the dedication of the Ugandan moms to learn the Four Steps of Prayer so they could pray more effectively for their children. They even borrowed the few Booklets Jessica had so they could hand copy them in order to have the information they needed.” – Lori Bell, Indiana State Coordinator

“While Jessica described the moms in Uganda, you could tell that they have such love and compassion for one another. They would fast and pray for each other when difficult circumstances arose. I too was amazed at the hunger and thirst for the Booklets, staying up all night and hand copying them was amazing to me.” – Lynette Taylor, Great Lakes Division Coordinator

“Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.” Isaiah 12:4b

PRAY WITH ME

Lord God Almighty, the Victorious One, we continue to pray for all those affected by the hurricanes in North Carolina and Florida. Please comfort those who have lost loved ones and those who have witnessed the devastation. Bring help where it is still needed and restoration to these areas. We cry out for people in these states and around the world who don’t know You, to turn to You and seek You, especially when they are in turmoil. They need You as their Savior.

Lord, thank you for the good things You are doing through the Moms in Prayer International ministry and for the rescheduled 40th Anniversary Event. May Your good Spirit lead the headquarters team and Ridgecrest Conference Center on level ground (From Psalm 143:10). Father, may we all remember to give you thanks in all circumstances and trust that You are Victorious in our lives and have made us more than conquerors through You who loved us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58
